The lens’s internal zoom and focus design maintains a constant physical length, improving balance and handling on rigs and stabilizers. Two floating Dual Nano USM motors independently drive the focusing system, providing fast, quiet, and precise autofocus that fully supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF for both stills and video. Focus breathing is effectively suppressed to maintain framing consistency as focus shifts.

Optically, the lens features 18 elements in 15 groups, including Super UD and UD elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and three aspherical elements to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness. Air Sphere and Super Spectra Coatings reduce flare and ghosting, while a fluorine coating on exposed surfaces repels water and oil. A robust, weather-resistant L-series build ensures reliable performance in challenging environments.
